Amazon Introduces Alexa+ AI Assistant Within Music App

Feature Overview

Amazon Music now hosts Alexa+, a conversational AI assistant that lets users interact with the app using natural language. By tapping the "A" button in the lower right corner, listeners can ask a variety of questions—from locating a newly released track by a specific artist to identifying a song based on a lyric or TV‑show placement. The assistant is designed for follow‑up queries, allowing users to narrow results much like a conversation with a friend.

Search Capabilities and Playlist Creation

Alexa+ supports detailed searches by era, mood, instrument, or even exclusion criteria (“what you don’t want it to serve up”). It can also generate playlists on demand, such as a high‑energy running playlist with songs from a particular decade that starts with a track from a certain artist, or more vague requests that match a user’s current mood or time of day.

Music Expertise

Beyond discovery, the assistant functions as a music expert. Users can inquire about the inspiration behind lyrics, chart performance of an album, or upcoming live performances. This positions Alexa+ as both an AI tastemaker and a personal DJ.

Device Integration

Since the beginning of the year, Amazon has been rolling out Alexa+ across its hardware lineup. The assistant is now built into Ring devices, the latest Kindle models, the Vega smart TV operating system, and the Echo Studio speaker. Early impressions note more human‑like conversation skills, though occasional basic errors—like misidentifying the day of the week—still occur.

Availability and Pricing

Alexa+ is currently available in early access for all tiers of Amazon Music. Amazon plans to make the feature free for Prime members, while non‑Prime subscribers will eventually be able to add it for $20 per month, a price that exceeds the cost of a standard Amazon Prime subscription.
