Background

AMD, long regarded as Nvidia’s biggest rival in the AI chip market, has seen its market capitalization rise dramatically under the leadership of CEO Lisa Su. While still smaller than Nvidia, AMD’s growth has positioned it as a key supplier of compute power for emerging AI workloads.

AI Bubble Question

During Wired’s Big Interview event, Su was asked whether the tech industry is experiencing an AI bubble. She responded emphatically that, from her perspective, it is not. Su described concerns about a bubble as “somewhat overstated,” emphasizing that the AI industry will require a massive number of chips from companies like AMD to support the next generation of models and data‑center infrastructure.

AMD’s AI Strategy

Su highlighted the company’s commitment to accelerating innovation and scaling production to meet the anticipated surge in demand. She noted that AMD is focused on moving faster in the innovation cycle, a priority that keeps her “up at night.” The CEO also addressed regulatory challenges, confirming that AMD will comply with a 15 percent tax on its MI308 chips when resuming shipments to China, a cost previously estimated at roughly $800 million.

OpenAI Partnership

Earlier this year, AMD struck a significant deal with OpenAI. The agreement calls for OpenAI to deploy six gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs over several years, beginning with a rollout slated for the second half of next year. As part of the partnership, OpenAI will purchase 160 million AMD shares at a nominal price, effectively securing a ten‑percent stake in the company.

Future Outlook

Su expressed confidence that AI is still in its infancy and that AMD must be ready to supply the next wave of more powerful models. She underscored that competition from Nvidia, Google, and Amazon is real, but the company’s focus remains on faster innovation and expanding its presence in AI‑driven data centers. According to Su, there is “no reason not to keep pushing that technology” forward.
