Policy Announcement

Bandcamp issued a blog post stating that any music or audio on its platform that is "wholly or in substantial part" produced by generative AI is prohibited. The company also clarified that existing policies already ban the use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or replicate their styles. When content is suspected of being AI‑generated, Bandcamp reserves the right to remove it, and it is providing users with reporting tools to flag such material.

Context of AI Music Flood

AI‑generated music, often referred to as “slop,” has been increasingly appearing on streaming services. For example, Deezer reported that 50,000 AI‑generated songs are uploaded to the app daily, accounting for roughly 34 percent of its music catalog. This surge has raised concerns among musicians and fans who value the human connection inherent in music.

Industry Response

Other major platforms have been slower to adopt firm policies. Spotify has taken limited steps, promising to develop an industry standard for AI disclosure in music credits and to introduce an impersonation policy. Deezer, meanwhile, remains the only streaming service that signed a global statement on AI artist training, supported by numerous songwriters and industry actors.

Bandcamp’s Artist Support Initiatives

Bandcamp’s new AI policy adds to its track record of supporting creators. The platform’s Bandcamp Fridays program, which allocates 100 percent of streaming revenue to artists, has already directed over $120 million to musicians. Bandcamp has indicated that this initiative will continue into 2026, reinforcing its commitment to the financial well‑being of artists.

Implications

By establishing a clear stance on AI‑generated music, Bandcamp aims to preserve the cultural and societal value of human‑made music. The policy also provides a framework for users to help maintain the integrity of the platform’s catalog, ensuring that listeners continue to experience authentic, artist‑driven content.
