Free Gemini Access Launches in Chrome

Google announced that Gemini, its AI agent, will now be available in Chrome without a membership fee. The rollout begins today for Mac and Windows users in the United States, extending the service to a broader consumer base.

New Task‑Automation Capabilities

Gemini is being equipped to perform a range of “tedious tasks” on users’ behalf. These include grocery shopping from email lists, rescheduling deliveries, setting up hair appointments, booking restaurant reservations and similar activities. The system incorporates checkpoints for actions considered high‑risk or irreversible.

Deep Integration with Google Workspace and Other Services

Both regular and Enterprise users of Google Workspace will gain Gemini access, allowing the AI to interact with tools such as Calendar, YouTube, Maps and additional Google products. This integration enables Gemini to locate relevant information on a user’s screen and take action within those tools.

Desktop Chrome Enhancements

On desktop Chrome, Gemini can operate across multiple tabs, helping users compare products, summarize information from several sources and recall pages from browser history. Users can close tabs and later ask Gemini to retrieve the content they were viewing, effectively preserving browsing context without keeping tabs open.

Mobile Expansion and Upcoming iPhone Support

Gemini was already embedded in Android, but the update now lets users share the entire context of a page, supporting deeper queries beyond the visible screen. iPhone users will soon be able to access Gemini through the Chrome app.

Competitive Landscape

The enhancements arrive amid a growing “AI‑agent browser” race. Anthropic introduced Computer Use for Claude, OpenAI launched Operator and later combined it with Deep research into the ChatGPT Agent, while Perplexity released Comet, an AI‑powered web browser. Atlassian recently spent $610 million to acquire The Browser Company, the maker of the AI‑infused browser Dia, underscoring the industry’s rapid consolidation around AI‑enabled browsing experiences.
