OpenAI Expands Group Chat Feature with ChatGPT to All Users Worldwide
Feature Overview
OpenAI announced that its Group Chats feature, which embeds ChatGPT directly into multi‑person conversations, will be made available globally to all logged‑in users on its Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans. The feature supports up to twenty participants per chat and is designed to help users collaborate on tasks such as event planning.
User Experience
In Group Chats, only the AI’s replies count against the rate limit; messages sent by participants do not. Users can summon the chatbot by tagging it, and they may also provide custom instructions that set the tone or personality for the AI’s responses. The model has been trained to recognize conversational flow, staying quiet when appropriate or chiming in when needed, and it can react with emojis.
Safety Measures
OpenAI has built safeguards into the rollout. Participants must accept an invitation before being added to a group, preventing unwanted additions. Additional protections reduce sensitive content for users under the age of eighteen. The system does not draw on personal chat memory for group interactions, and no new memory is created from group conversations, though OpenAI is exploring optional memory integration in the future.
Future Directions
OpenAI frames the expansion of Group Chats as the beginning of a broader effort to transform ChatGPT into a shared, collaborative environment. While the current version does not retain memory from group chats, the company is investigating ways to allow users to opt‑in to memory sharing across conversations, potentially enhancing continuity and personalization.
