Strategic Shift in Wearable Technology

Apple is sidelining its plans to overhaul the Vision Pro virtual‑reality headset, opting instead to concentrate on AI‑enabled smart glasses that can compete with offerings from Meta. The decision involves reallocating staff from the Vision Pro project to the smart‑glasses initiatives.

Two Distinct Smart‑Glasses Projects

According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing at least two types of smart glasses. The first, nicknamed N50, will not have its own display and will pair with an iPhone to deliver visual content. Apple aims to unveil this model as early as next year, with a market launch targeted for 2027.

The second model includes an integrated display, positioning it directly against Meta’s recently unveiled Ray‑Ban smart glasses. While this version was initially expected to reach consumers in 2028, Apple is now expediting its development to accelerate the timeline.

Competitive Landscape

Apple’s pivot comes as the company acknowledges its lag behind Meta, which launched its first smart glasses in 2021. By focusing on AI capabilities and multiple form factors, Apple seeks to close the gap and establish a foothold in the emerging smart‑glasses market.
