Google Expands NotebookLM Mobile App with Flashcards, Quizzes, and Chat Upgrades
New Generative Features for Study On‑the‑Go
Google’s NotebookLM, a Gemini‑powered AI research assistant that relies exclusively on user‑supplied sources, now lets mobile users create flashcards and quizzes inside the app. The tools are accessed through the Studio tab, where users can select a Notebook and prompt the AI to generate a set of cards or questions based on the material they have uploaded. Options let users adjust the number of items, set a difficulty level, and specify particular topics to focus on, ensuring that the generated content targets gaps in knowledge rather than material the user already knows well.
Prior to this release, the mobile version offered only the Audio Overviews feature, which provides spoken summaries of selected content. By adding flashcards and quizzes, Google broadens NotebookLM’s utility for students and professionals who need quick, portable study aids. The new capabilities mirror those already available on the web platform, indicating a move toward feature parity across devices.
Chat Enhancements Boost Conversational Depth
Alongside the study tools, NotebookLM’s chat interface received a suite of updates aimed at making conversations feel more natural and precise. The context window has been expanded to one million tokens, allowing the model to consider a much larger body of information when formulating responses. Additionally, the system’s capacity for multiturn dialogues has been increased sixfold, helping the AI retain important prior context throughout extended exchanges.
These backend and front‑end improvements were highlighted in Google’s announcement blog, emphasizing that the mobile app now benefits from the same chat upgrades rolled out earlier in the month for the broader NotebookLM service. Users can expect quicker, more accurate answers that reflect a deeper understanding of the supplied documents.
While the update represents a solid step forward, Google acknowledges that the mobile app still lacks several advanced features present on the desktop version. Nonetheless, the addition of flashcards, quizzes, and robust chat functionality signals the company’s commitment to delivering a comprehensive AI‑assisted research and study experience on both iOS and Android platforms.
