Google Home app update adds automation editor, water controls, event filters, and favorites
Overview
Google has released an update to the Google Home app (version 3.40) that adds several new capabilities aimed at simplifying smart‑home management. The update is already available to users, while a more extensive version (3.41) is slated for the Gemini for Home event on October 1.
Automation editor with conditions
The most prominent addition is a revamped automation editor. Users can now create automations that include conditions such as specific days of the week, device status, and presence detection, allowing for more personalized and intelligent routines.
Water controls and thermostat enhancements
The update expands support for older Nest Thermostat models by adding hot‑water controls and scheduling features for the first time. Eco‑control settings and outdoor temperature information have also been improved, though these functions are limited to users in the United Kingdom and the European Union.
Event filters for camera feeds
Camera users gain the ability to filter events directly within the events view, selecting categories like person or vehicle. The existing Activity Tab filter remains available.
Suggested favorites for quick access
When multiple devices are linked to the Google Home app, a new favorites tab highlights the most‑used devices. If no devices have been manually marked as favorites, the app suggests devices that can be edited at any time.
Bug fixes and upcoming release
Alongside new features, the update addresses layout issues during device setup and resolves accessibility problems related to lock settings. Google indicates that a larger update (version 3.41) will debut at the Gemini for Home event, which is also expected to showcase new smart‑home hardware, including a rumored Google Home Speaker.
