Google Search now runs its AI Overview feature on the Gemini 3 model. AI Overviews appear at the top of search results, summarizing complex topics in a single snapshot. With Gemini 3 as the default, those snapshots become smarter, longer, and more clearly organized.

In addition, the update introduces a direct link from an AI Overview to Google’s AI Mode. Users can start a back‑and‑forth conversation with the same AI without opening a new tab or restarting the search.

How It Works

When a user asks a multi‑part or nuanced question, Gemini 3 generates an Overview that distills the key points. If the user wants to explore further, a tap on the new “continue in AI Mode” button opens an interactive chat window that retains the original context. The conversation can refine the answer, ask about exceptions, or request visual aids such as tables—all within the same thread.

User Impact

The seamless transition reduces friction. Previously, users had to click a separate AI Mode tab and begin a fresh search, often losing the original context. Now the flow stays within the search results page, allowing deeper inquiry without redundant queries.

Early testing showed that people naturally want to extend an Overview with follow‑up questions. By keeping the context alive, the system can answer more specific angles, decreasing the need to re‑phrase or repeat information.
