OpenAI Halts ChatGPT App Suggestions After User Backlash Over Ad‑Like Prompts
TechRadar

Background

ChatGPT recently introduced the ability to invoke third‑party apps directly within conversations. The platform automatically suggested relevant apps—such as real‑estate or travel tools—when topics arose.

User Reaction

Many users reported that the suggestions looked indistinguishable from ads, sparking confusion and concern about advertising on the AI service. Screenshots circulated online showing the app prompts alongside chat content, leading to criticism that the experience felt like unwanted advertising.

OpenAI Response

OpenAI acknowledged the problem, stating the app suggestions “fell short” of user expectations. The company turned off the automatic suggestions while it works to improve the model’s precision. Marc Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, said the team is looking at better controls so users can dial the feature down or turn it off entirely. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, emphasized that there are no live ad tests and that any perceived ads were not intentional.

Future Plans

OpenAI indicated it will develop mechanisms for users to manage or disable app suggestions and will refine the system to ensure future prompts are clearly differentiated from advertising. The move aims to preserve user trust while still expanding the app ecosystem within ChatGPT.
