Anthropic Introduces Voice Mode to Claude Code AI Coding Assistant

Voice Mode Launch for Claude Code

Anthropic is extending its Voice Mode capability to Claude Code, the company’s AI coding assistant designed for developers. The rollout was announced by Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar on X, where he described the feature as a gradual release. At the time of the announcement, Voice Mode was live for about 5% of Claude Code users, with a broader rollout expected over the next several weeks. Users can enable the new mode by typing /voice in the interface, after which spoken commands are processed by Claude Code. An example command provided by Shihipar was “refactor the authentication middleware,” illustrating how developers can issue natural‑language instructions and have the AI execute the requested code changes.

The announcement noted that the precise limitations of Voice Mode—such as potential caps on interactions or technical constraints—were not yet disclosed. It also remained unclear whether the feature was built in partnership with a third‑party voice provider, despite earlier reports that Anthropic had been in talks with companies like ElevenLabs. Anthropic has not responded to requests for comment from TechCrunch regarding these details.

Background and Market Context

Anthropic previously launched Voice Mode for its standard Claude chatbot in May of the previous year, allowing users to interact with the model via voice for a variety of general‑purpose tasks. The extension of the technology to Claude Code represents a significant step toward more hands‑free, conversational coding workflows, positioning the product alongside other AI‑driven development tools.

The AI coding assistant market is highly competitive. Major players such as Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google’s AI offerings, and OpenAI’s solutions are all vying for developers’ attention. Despite this competition, Claude Code is described as one of the most widely adopted tools in the market today.

Financially, Anthropic reported that Claude Code’s run‑rate revenue surpassed $2.5 billion in February, more than doubling since the beginning of 2026. Weekly active users of Claude Code have also doubled since January, indicating rapid growth and strong user engagement. Additionally, the company’s mobile app experienced a dramatic increase in downloads after Anthropic declined a request from the Department of Defense to use its AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. Following that decision, the app rose to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, overtaking ChatGPT.

Overall, the introduction of Voice Mode to Claude Code adds a new dimension to the product’s capabilities, offering developers a more natural and efficient way to interact with AI while reinforcing Anthropic’s position in a crowded and fast‑evolving market.
