Anthropic previews 'auto mode' for Claude Code to reduce risky file operations
Background
Anthropic introduced a preview of "auto mode" for its Claude Code AI assistant. The company positioned the feature as a compromise between the default setting—where Claude asks for user approval before every file write or bash command—and the risky practice some developers employ to let the chatbot act with minimal oversight.
Feature Overview
When auto mode is enabled, a classifier evaluates each proposed action. If the classifier judges the action safe, Claude proceeds without prompting the user. If the action appears risky, Claude is redirected to seek clarification or adopt an alternative approach. This design aims to curb incidents like mass file deletions, exposure of sensitive data, or execution of malicious code.
Safety Mechanisms
Anthropic built the classifier to act as a gatekeeper, granting permission only for actions that fit its safety criteria. The goal is to lower the likelihood that Claude will unintentionally delete large numbers of files, extract confidential information, or run harmful scripts. By filtering actions, the system seeks to protect both developers and the environments in which they work.
Limitations and Warnings
Anthropic cautions that the classifier is not infallible. The company notes that ambiguous user intent or insufficient context about the target environment could lead the classifier to permit risky actions. In such cases, Claude might still perform operations that carry additional risk.
Motivation
The recent 13‑hour AWS outage, which was linked to an AI tool that deleted a hosting environment, appears to have influenced Anthropic’s decision to develop auto mode. While Amazon attributed that incident to human error and broader-than‑expected permissions, the event underscored the need for tighter safeguards around AI‑driven code execution.
Rollout Plan
Team‑plan users can begin previewing auto mode immediately. Anthropic plans to extend the feature to Enterprise and API customers in the coming days, allowing a broader set of developers to benefit from the added safety layer while retaining the productivity gains of Claude Code.
