Claude Gains Visual Capabilities with New Chart and Diagram Feature

Claude’s New Visual Functionality

Anthropic has rolled out an update that enables its Claude chatbot to generate charts, diagrams, and other visual aids as part of its conversational output. Rather than creating raster images, Claude produces these visuals using HTML code and XML‑based vector graphics, a method Anthropic likens to giving the model its own whiteboard.

How the Feature Works

When a user asks a question that benefits from a visual explanation—or when Claude determines that a picture would clarify the response—the model can embed a chart or diagram directly into the chat window. The visual is rendered through standard web technologies, allowing it to scale cleanly and remain interactive in the same way a typical webpage element would.

Availability and Access

The new capability is available to every Claude user, regardless of whether they subscribe to a paid plan. Anthropic has made the feature universally accessible, emphasizing that it is not limited to premium accounts. However, the company notes that the rollout is still in beta, meaning users may encounter occasional glitches or unexpected behavior.

Limitations and Current Scope

Anthropic is clear that this is not an image‑generation system. The visuals are generated from code rather than from a generative‑art model, and the feature does not yet support mobile platforms. Users accessing Claude on smartphones will not see the new visual outputs until the functionality is expanded to those devices.

Context Within the AI Landscape

The release follows a similar move by OpenAI, which recently added interactive visual generation to its ChatGPT product for science and math explanations. Anthropic’s addition places Claude in direct competition with the leading conversational AI by offering comparable visual assistance, albeit through a different technical approach.

Expectations and Future Development

Anthropic advises users to treat the new visual capability as beta software, anticipating that refinements will be made based on feedback and observed performance. The company’s statement suggests that future updates may address current quirks, expand mobile support, and possibly broaden the range of visual formats that Claude can produce.
