Claude’s Consumer Growth Accelerates After Pentagon Standoff

App intelligence provider Appfigures reports that Claude’s mobile app is now receiving 149,000 daily downloads in the United States, surpassing the 124,000 daily downloads recorded for ChatGPT. This shift follows Anthropic’s decision to block the Pentagon from using its AI systems for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, a stance that positioned Claude as a “supply‑chain risk” for the government but boosted its appeal among consumers.

Rise in Daily Active Users

According to market intelligence firm SimilarWeb, Claude’s iOS and Android apps logged 11.3 million daily active users on the latest measurement day, up 183% from the start of the year when usage was around 4 million and higher than the 5 million daily active users recorded at the beginning of February. While ChatGPT still dominates the market with 250.5 million daily active users across iOS and Android, Claude now leads other AI apps such as Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot in daily active user counts.

Web Traffic Expansion

SimilarWeb also notes that Claude’s web traffic grew 43% month‑over‑month in February and surged 297.7% year‑over‑year. During the same period, ChatGPT’s web traffic fell 6.5% month‑over‑month, and Google’s Gemini saw a modest 2.1% increase, indicating that Claude’s growth may be occurring at the expense of its main rival.

App Store Rankings and Global Reach

Anthropic highlights that Claude has become the No. 1 app on the U.S. App Store, a position it retained over the past weekend. The app also holds the top spot in fifteen additional countries, including Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and others. The company reports that Claude now sees more than one million sign‑ups per day and has broken its own daily sign‑up record in every market where it is available.

Subscriber Growth and Future Outlook

Anthropic’s spokesperson indicated that daily active users have more than tripled since the beginning of the year and that paid subscribers have doubled. While the firm does not comment on third‑party data, the reported metrics suggest a strong upward trajectory for Claude’s consumer base as it capitalizes on the public’s preference for an AI model that resisted government surveillance mandates.
