Google Maps is introducing a new conversational tool named Ask Maps, built on the Gemini artificial‑intelligence model. The feature allows users to type or speak complex, real‑world questions in everyday language. Examples include inquiries about locating charging stations without long lines, finding public tennis courts with lighting, or planning multi‑stop road trips with recommended points of interest. Ask Maps draws on a user’s saved places and search history to tailor its answers, offering suggestions that match personal preferences such as dietary choices or favorite venues.

The service is currently available on Android and iOS devices in the United States and India, with plans to expand to desktop platforms. By integrating Gemini, Google Maps can provide contextual information about destinations, add events to calendars, and reference nearby landmarks when giving directions.

Immersive Navigation Update

Alongside the AI feature, Google Maps is rolling out an Immersive Navigation experience that transforms the visual and auditory aspects of driving assistance. The update introduces a three‑dimensional view that displays nearby buildings, overpasses and terrain, giving drivers a clearer sense of their surroundings. Road details such as lane markings, crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs are highlighted, while smart zoom functions and transparent building overlays help anticipate upcoming turns and lane changes.

Voice guidance has been refined to sound more natural, delivering instructions that flow like a conversation. The system also explains route trade‑offs, weighing factors such as traffic congestion, travel time and toll costs. Real‑time alerts about construction, accidents and other disruptions are provided using data from both the Google Maps and Waze communities.

Before reaching a destination, users can preview the area with Street View imagery, receive parking recommendations, and see visual cues that indicate building entrances and the optimal side of the street to approach. The Immersive Navigation rollout begins in the United States and will expand to compatible iOS and Android devices, as well as CarPlay, Android Auto and vehicles with built‑in Google technology.

Both Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation are designed to reduce guesswork during trips, delivering personalized, context‑aware information at the moment it is needed.
