Google Search AI Mode Adds Canvas Coding and Project Workspace

Google Search Introduces Expanded Canvas Functionality

Google Search has rolled out a major update to Canvas, the workspace embedded in AI Mode and powered by Gemini. Previously known for helping users draft and refine documents, Canvas now supports coding projects and interactive tools, allowing users to plan, code, and build small applications without leaving the search environment.

Universal Availability in the United States

The enhanced Canvas is now available to everyone in the United States and operates in English. Within AI Mode, Canvas appears as a side panel where users can continue improving their projects through follow‑up prompts, keeping the workflow inside a single interface.

Creating Code and Prototypes Directly in Search

To start a new tool or dashboard, users select the Canvas option from the AI Mode tool menu and describe the desired outcome. Gemini then generates a working prototype that appears inside the Canvas panel. Example outputs include a basic web app, a calculator, or a simple game, all delivered as functional code ready for review.

Iterative Development and Assistance

After code generation, users can review and edit the output, asking Gemini to improve, expand, or debug specific sections. The system can add new features, explain how parts of the code work, and incorporate relevant information from the web and Google’s knowledge graph to refine the project.

Continued Support for Writing and Planning Tasks

Canvas retains its original writing capabilities, helping users draft essays, plan reports, and organize study guides. Users can highlight sections of text and request expansions, simplifications, or restructuring. The AI also assists with trip planning and booking, demonstrating the breadth of tasks the workspace can handle.

Turning Search Into a Creation Hub

With this update, Google positions Search as more than an information‑retrieval tool. It becomes a space where users can build, write, and refine projects with AI assistance, streamlining workflows that previously required separate editors or development environments.
