OpenAI Adds Recent Files Menu and Library Tab to Streamline ChatGPT File Management

New Features Overview

OpenAI announced that ChatGPT will soon include a Recent files option in the attachment menu. This feature lists the files users have interacted with most recently, allowing them to jump back into ongoing work without scrolling through previous conversations. In addition, a Library tab will appear in the web sidebar, acting as a centralized repository for all uploaded and AI‑generated files. The Library lets users browse, search, and attach files to new chats with a single click.

Enhanced Productivity

The changes address a long‑standing pain point for users who juggle multiple documents across separate chat threads. By decoupling files from individual conversations, OpenAI enables faster file reuse and reduces the need to re‑upload documents for follow‑up questions. Users can now ask ChatGPT about the content of previously uploaded files directly, streamlining workflows for research, data analysis, and other tasks that rely on recurring file access.

Rollout and Availability

OpenAI says the updates are rolling out globally to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers. Availability in the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom will follow shortly. The company has not indicated whether the features will be offered to free‑tier users.

Strategic Implications

These enhancements reinforce OpenAI’s strategy of expanding ChatGPT beyond a conversational chatbot toward a comprehensive productivity platform. By improving file management, OpenAI positions the service as a more attractive option for professional and enterprise users who need to organize and reference large amounts of data within the AI interface.
