OpenAI and Helion Discuss Power Deal as Sam Altman Steps Down from Helion Board
Leadership Change Signals Potential Partnership
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman is stepping down from his role as board chair of Helion, the fusion startup he has backed for more than a decade. Helion’s co‑founder and CEO David Kirtley said Altman's departure "enables Helion and OpenAI to partner on future opportunities to bring zero‑carbon, safe electricity to the world." The move comes as reports indicate that OpenAI and Helion are in early‑stage talks about a power supply arrangement.
Proposed Power Deal Details
According to the reporting, the tentative agreement could secure OpenAI 12.5% of Helion’s production, translating to five gigawatts by 2030 and 50 gigawatts by 2035. If the figures prove accurate, Helion would need to build and install 800 reactors by 2030 and an additional 7,200 reactors by 2035, each rated at 50 megawatts of electricity.
Helion’s Technology and Progress
Helion is pursuing a distinct approach to fusion power, using magnetic fields to convert fusion energy directly into electricity rather than the more common steam‑turbine method. The company’s Polaris prototype recently generated plasma at 150 million degrees Celsius, approaching the 200 million degrees Celsius the company believes are required for commercial operation. Helion aims to have its first commercial‑scale reactor online in the near future, which would place it years ahead of most competitors targeting the early 2030s.
Existing Partnerships and Funding
Helion already has a power purchase agreement with Microsoft, signed in 2023, that will begin delivering electricity in 2028. The company also maintains a customer relationship with Nucor. In the prior year, Helion raised $425 million from investors that include Altman, Mithril, Lightspeed, and SoftBank.
Industry Context
The leadership shift mirrors a similar move Altman made last year when he stepped down as board chair of Oklo, a small modular nuclear reactor startup, to allow that company to explore strategic partnerships with AI firms. Helion’s reported talks with OpenAI suggest a growing interest in linking advanced AI capabilities with emerging clean‑energy technologies.
