OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Library for File Storage and Retrieval

New File Management Inside ChatGPT

OpenAI announced that ChatGPT users can now store, browse, and retrieve files they upload and create directly within the AI chat tool. All documents uploaded in the normal chat window are automatically saved to a new Library, provided the user is logged into their account. The Library appears as a searchable left‑hand sidebar where users can pull up files in a single central location.

Availability and Access

The Library feature is limited to Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers, meaning users must pay at least $20 per month to use the storage capability. Access to saved files requires an active internet connection.

Integration With Memory Feature

If a user enables ChatGPT’s Memory feature, the chatbot can reference files saved in the Library during future conversations, allowing a more contextual and personalized experience.

Supported File Types and Limits

OpenAI lists documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images as supported file types. Generated images remain in the Images tab. The service imposes several size restrictions: the maximum file size is 512 MB, documents and chat conversations are limited to 2 million tokens, spreadsheets and CSV files must be 50 MB or smaller, and images must be 20 MB or smaller.

How to Use the Library

To add a file, users sign in, click the plus sign on the left side of the chat window, and choose the “Add from Library” option. The Library sidebar allows filtering by file type and by whether the file was uploaded or created within ChatGPT.

Deleting Files

Files can be deleted by selecting them in the Library window and clicking “delete” or the trash icon. OpenAI states that deleted files are removed within 30 days unless the company needs them for security, legal obligations, or if the associated chat has already been de‑identified and disassociated from the user.

Broader Product Updates

Alongside the Library launch, OpenAI is refining its AI models and expanding services for developers. The company introduced faster models tailored for debugging code, positioning itself against competitors such as Anthropic’s Claude Code. Executives have also discussed building a “superapp” desktop interface that would consolidate ChatGPT, the coding platform Codex, and the AI‑assisted browser Atlas into a single application. In a related move, OpenAI announced the shutdown of its AI video app Sora, shifting focus toward coding and productivity tools like Codex.
