Perplexity Expands Personal Computer AI to All Mac Users

Perplexity rolled out its Personal Computer AI platform to the broader Mac community on Thursday, making the software available as a free download from the company’s website. The shift ends a brief beta phase that was restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers and a limited waitlist, and it brings the company’s answer to local AI agents like OpenClaw into the hands of anyone with a Mac.

Personal Computer, an extension of Perplexity’s broader “Perplexity Computer” digital worker, is designed to run autonomous agents directly on a user’s device. The platform lets those agents read and write local files, interact with native macOS applications, and tap into over 400 connectors to external services. By operating within a secure development environment on Perplexity’s servers, the tool aims to keep user data insulated from the cloud‑only model that dominates many AI offerings.

Unlike OpenClaw, which raised security concerns due to its elevated permissions, Perplexity markets its solution as a safer way to embed AI into everyday workflows. The company notes that agents can compare documents across apps, pull notes from one program to draft content in another, and even orchestrate spreadsheet calculations without manual input. When paired with Perplexity’s AI‑powered Comet browser, the system can manipulate web‑based tools without needing additional connectors.

Access to the full suite of Personal Computer capabilities still requires a Pro or Max subscription, but the base app is now downloadable directly from Perplexity’s site. The company says the older Mac app will be retired in the coming weeks so developers can focus on the new platform. Users can also control the AI remotely via an iPhone, approving requests or launching tasks from their handheld device.

The launch targets professionals who juggle multiple files, projects and applications on a daily basis. Perplexity’s blog describes the tool as a way to shift “the computer out of the cloud‑only world and onto the device where most of your real work already takes place.” By keeping the heavy lifting on a Mac Mini or similar always‑on device, the service promises faster response times and reduced reliance on internet bandwidth.

Industry observers see the move as part of a broader trend toward local AI assistants that blend the convenience of cloud models with the privacy of on‑device processing. Perplexity’s entry into this space could pressure rivals to tighten security and broaden accessibility. For now, Mac users looking to automate repetitive tasks have a new option that blends AI power with the familiar macOS environment.
