xAI Faces Turmoil as Co‑Founders Depart and Staff Morale Declines
Leadership Shake‑up
After a series of exits, only Manuel Kroiss—known as “Makro”—and Ross Nordeen remain from the eleven co‑founders who helped Elon Musk launch xAI in San Francisco in March 2023. Former co‑founders such as Greg Yang, Tony Wu, and Jimmy Ba have been removed, and Toby Pohlen, who was put in charge of the “Macrohard” project, left after sixteen days.
Project Reorganization
Musk criticized the coding team for falling behind and announced a reorganization that includes redeploying Ashok Elluswamy, head of AI software at Tesla, to revive the Macrohard effort. He also highlighted a partnership between Tesla and xAI to develop a “digital Optimus” that would blend the car maker’s real‑world AI expertise with xAI’s Grok large‑language models.
Infrastructure and Data Advantages
xAI has built a large data center in Memphis, Tennessee, equipped with more than 200,000 specialized AI chips, with plans to expand to one million GPUs over time. The center benefits from data supplied by Musk’s social media platform X, which was merged with xAI last year and now promotes the Grok chatbot.
Staff Morale and Turnover
Employees received a memo denying mass layoffs, yet researchers continue to quit, citing burnout from Musk’s “extremely hardcore” work demands or better offers from competitors. The departures have left many roles unfilled, prompting recruiters to contact previously unsuccessful candidates with improved financial terms.
Recruiting Efforts
Musk apologized for past missed hiring opportunities and said he would review the company’s interview history to reach out to promising candidates. Recent hires include two engineers from the AI coding app Cursor—Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg—who were welcomed with a post referencing future orbital space centers and mass drivers on the Moon.
