Google Adds Gemini-Powered Ask Maps to Google Maps App

Feature Overview

Google is introducing Ask Maps, a new Gemini‑powered conversational feature inside the Google Maps app. Described as a "conversational experience," Ask Maps allows users to interact with the app using natural language. Users can ask follow‑up questions, rephrase their queries and explore additional prompts, similar to the way Gemini works on Google Home devices.

User Benefits

Ask Maps goes beyond traditional voice navigation by answering detailed questions about a trip and the surrounding area. For example, a user whose phone battery is low can ask the app to locate a nearby charging station, while someone looking for evening recreation can request a well‑lit tennis court. The feature also provides in‑depth recommendations for stops and tips when visiting popular tourist destinations.

Gemini tailors its responses using information previously stored in Maps, such as preferred restaurant types. This personalization helps the assistant suggest options that match a user’s habits and preferences.

Enhanced Navigation Experience

After the update, spoken directions sound more natural and flow with on‑map highlights. Google Maps also improves its ability to suggest alternative routes in case of traffic issues and enhances the arrival experience by highlighting details such as which side of a building entrances are on.

Rollout and Future Plans

Ask Maps is currently available to users in the United States and India. Google plans to extend the enhanced Maps features to additional platforms, including CarPlay and Android Auto, in the coming months.
