OpenAI released data showing that Indian users between the ages of 18 and 24 generate nearly 50% of all messages sent to ChatGPT, while those under 30 account for 80% of total usage. The platform is being used heavily for work‑related purposes, with 35% of messages tied to professional tasks, compared with 30% globally. Outside of work, 35% of queries request guidance, 20% seek general information, and another 20% ask the model to produce or help with writing.

Coding Assistant Gains Traction

The AI lab highlighted that its coding assistant, Codex, is seeing strong uptake in India. Indian users employ Codex three times more than the global median, and weekly usage has risen four times since the tool’s Mac app launch two weeks ago. Users in India also pose three times as many coding‑related questions as the median user worldwide.

Strategic Expansion and Partnerships

OpenAI is deepening its footprint in India with new offices planned for Mumbai and Bengaluru. A major partnership with the Tata Group will provide 100 megawatts of AI compute capacity and distribute ChatGPT Enterprise through Tata’s IT services subsidiary, TCS. Additional agreements have been signed with fintech company Pine Labs, travel platforms Ixigo and MakeMyTrip, and food‑and‑grocery delivery service Eternal.

The company is also collaborating with educational institutions to make its tools available to more than 100,000 students over the next six years. These moves complement OpenAI’s pricing strategy, which includes a sub‑$5 subscription tier for Indian users, and previous promotional campaigns aimed at accelerating adoption.

India stands as OpenAI’s second‑largest market, boasting more than 100 million weekly users. The company’s chief economist noted that AI adoption is outpacing measurement capabilities, emphasizing the need for real‑world evidence to inform the AI debate in the country.
