Google Expands Gemini AI Across Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

Gemini AI Moves Into the Core of Google Workspace

Google is embedding its Gemini AI assistant more deeply within the suite of Workspace applications. The rollout targets both Google Workspace customers and subscribers to Google’s AI plans, delivering a consistent set of AI‑powered capabilities across Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.

Gemini in Google Docs

Docs now displays a Gemini chat window at the bottom of the screen. Users can describe the type of document they need, and Gemini creates a fully formatted draft by pulling information from the web, Drive, Gmail, and Chat. The assistant can also match the style of an existing document, helping users maintain consistent formatting without manual editing. When collaborating, users can highlight another’s text and select “Match writing style,” prompting Gemini to analyze tone and rewrite the passage in‑line. All suggestions remain private until the document owner approves them.

Gemini in Google Sheets

Sheets receives the ability to generate entire spreadsheets based on natural‑language descriptions. Gemini can pull data from a user’s files, emails, chats, and the web to populate sheets, and it can fill tables using information from existing spreadsheets or online sources. The assistant can also perform analytical tasks, such as optimizing employee schedules for profit while balancing staff availability and skill requirements, by responding to prompts in a side panel.

Gemini in Google Slides

Slides now allows users to ask Gemini to generate a slide, automatically inserting copy and formatting it to match the rest of the deck. Users can also prompt Gemini to edit existing slides, removing the need for manual adjustments to text or images. Google indicates that a feature to generate an entire presentation from a text prompt and Workspace data will be available soon.

Gemini in Google Drive

Drive transforms from a passive storage container into an active knowledge base. When users search for files using natural language, Drive presents an AI Overview that lists relevant documents or answers questions with citations, similar to Google Search but focused on the user’s own files. The new “Ask Gemini in Drive” feature lets users query the assistant about stored files, Gmail, Calendar, and Chat content, with controls to limit which sources are included and to narrow the search to specific folders.

Security and Availability

All of these Gemini‑powered features come with the same enterprise‑grade data protections that apply to the rest of Workspace. The rollout is occurring in English for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers as well as Workspace customers who have Gemini Alpha enabled.
