Housemarque says Saros will use PSSR 2 on PS5 Pro for sharper 60‑fps image, but cutscenes stay at 30 fps
Housemarque has revealed that its next‑gen action‑horror game Saros will take advantage of Sony's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution 2 (PSSR 2) on the PlayStation 5 Pro. The upgrade means the title will render at a higher base resolution and maintain a smooth 60 fps cadence, delivering an image that the studio describes as "barely distinguishable from native 4K" while players explore the game's twisted world of Carcosa.
Creative director Gregory Louden explained in a PlayStation Blog post that the team upgraded to PSSR 2 shortly after the technology debuted last month. "Since 1995, our goal at Housemarque has been to push the hardware, and with Saros we continue this drive thanks to this PSSR update," Louden said. He added that the new upscaling technique enhances sharpness without sacrificing performance, a balance the studio has chased on every console generation.
Technical director Seppo Halonen detailed how the PS5 Pro's increased base rendering resolution translates to a clearer image on a scene‑by‑scene basis. "While we use dynamic resolution to ensure a stable frame rate even in the middle of hectic combat, PS5 Pro always delivers a sharper image in a scene‑to‑scene comparison," Halonen noted. He emphasized that the visual boost is not merely more pixels; reflections, lighting and overall texture quality also receive refinements that make the upgrade feel substantive.
The enhancements extend beyond raw visuals. The PlayStation Blog also highlighted immersive 3D audio, DualSense haptic feedback and faster loading times as part of the PS5 Pro experience. Those features, combined with the PSSR 2 upscaling, aim to make Saros feel more cinematic and responsive than its predecessor titles.
Despite the performance gains, Housemarque confirmed that key story cinematics will run at 30 fps on both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Halonen explained the decision as a conscious choice to prioritize "quality over quantity" for narrative moments. "The only place where we switch to 30 fps is in key story cinematics where we go quality over quantity and render the high‑quality characters, lighting and post‑processing at peak resolution – which again is higher on PS5 Pro," he said.
Fans can expect the game to launch on April 30, exclusive to Sony's current‑gen consoles. The release will be a timed exclusive for the PS5 family, meaning no Xbox or PC version is planned at launch. Housemarque's focus on leveraging the PS5 Pro's hardware suggests that the studio sees the new console as a platform for pushing visual fidelity in a way that aligns with its long‑standing reputation for technical ambition.
Industry observers note that Saros could serve as a showcase title for the PS5 Pro, demonstrating how PSSR 2 can bridge the gap between native 4K rendering and the performance constraints of high‑intensity action games. If the visual improvements hold up under real‑world scrutiny, the title may set a new benchmark for future releases seeking to balance high frame rates with cinematic quality.
